Kootenay Covers Overview

How Kootenay Covers Work

Place the cover on your tree after pollination but before pests arrive in spring. The fine mesh prevents insects from laying eggs on your young fruit, keeping caterpillars and maggots away. Simply lift the cover at harvest time to enjoy a pest-free crop.

Do I need to prepare my trees?

You prune the tree for use with the cover the same way you would prune it if you were going to spray. You want to be able to reach the fruit safely and easily. Depending on the type and variety of tree, and your past pruning practices, your tree may need just a little pruning or maybe a lot. If your tree(s) has not been pruned for a very long time you may need to give it a major pruning. Bringing an older unmanaged tree back into production can be very much worth the effort.

How to Install Fruit Tree Covers

Gather a few friends and use four poles to lift the cover over the top of the tree. Gently lower the cover to rest over the tree. Secure the bottom of the cover around the trunk by tying it snugly with a piece of rope. When it's time to harvest, simply open the bottom of the cover and start picking your fruit!

General Instructions (for unspecified cover size):

Gather materials (4 poles, 4 tennis balls, sharp knife, long rope, 4 helpers), cut a plus sign in each tennis ball and place on poles, lay cover flat with Velcro side up, place poles at corners marked with red arrows, lift cover over tree, center it, lower onto canopy, gather excess cover at bottom, wrap rope around trunk and tie tightly, check for open seams or holes and use safety pins if needed, store poles and tennis balls, watch out for wires and people during installation, leave cover on until all fruit is picked to avoid insect damage, untie cover, insert poles, lift it off, fold, and store for future use.

Specific Instructions for 6 ft and 8 ft Kootenay Covers:

Trim tree to size, measure canopy and height, avoid pruning in wet weather, gather rope (6 ft) and a helper, lay cover flat, fold and lift over tree ensuring sides hang evenly, wrap cover around trunk, tie rope securely with a square knot, untie rope to thin or pick fruit and retie, keep cover on until all fruit is picked to avoid insect damage, untie rope, lift cover off, fold or roll, and store for future use.

WHAT OUR CUSTOMERS SAY

I love my fruit tree covers.  I am now on my third season for my gala apple tree and second year on my peach tree.  The year prior to purchasing my covers, I harvested 2 apples that weren't eaten by the wasps or birds. My first year using the cover on my apple tree I harvested over 225 lbs. of apples...and not one single apple had wasp bites, bird pecks, or worms.  Every apple was perfect.  The wind doesn't blow them off and you don't have to pick up fruit before you mow your lawn.  Fruit that does fall off the tree just as they ripen, stays inside the cover and not on the ground.  And it doesn't bruise as it falls on the soft fabric that cushions the impact. I also had great results last year for my peach tree.  No wasp bites, no worms, or bird pecks.  My harvest was the best I've ever had with that tree.

I have used the covers two years. I highly recommend them. They really work well. I used them on Granny Smith apples and Stella Cherries.

Just wanted to let you know that the bag worked perfectly! First crop in 5 years without worms - we are very excited and very grateful. Thanks!

We had purchased your covering last year and I couldn't believe what incredible cherries we had. Of course it was a wonderful year for all fruit but the main thing was NO worms in our cherries. You would not believe the excitement in my family and anyone that had the opportunity to try them had, so tasty. I am really looking forward to this year's crop again.

I’ve bought a few of the covers for covering up my Cherry trees against the cherry maggot. They’re great! We just put them up.
